Again can anyone help?ive checked out the diagrams but am still a bit stuck.is the area im looking to hold fleshy or an actual bone,im guessing its on the outside of the rakers and im guessing that you need to lift the area in such a way/angle so the weight of upper jaw/head/body naturally opens itself?
Possibly my problem was because I had fish of 3-4lb and the arrangements are so close together.it was a big tide so had the fish safely nestled in the edge so i could have a good look.
Dont want to get it wrong guys.I had one carp die on me when i was a kid(in a sack/poor oxygen was the only conclusion as it was in 3 ft of water)and that was one dead fish too many.
Cheers

In reply to Post #10 its hard to describe but if ye push forward with the back of the palm of yer hand and pull with yer fingertips whilst holding the bottom jaw (yer liftin the head from the neck) the mouth usualy opens best to have the pike with the belly facing towards ur stumoch, i find larger pike easier to unhook as with smaller fish they tend to rehook easier like when ye free a teble it can hook somewhere else bigger fish it has a clearer escape route. ye dont need to use ur thumb to much and try to grip it with the top side of yer thumb and not yer thumbtip as it can pierce the flesh. if ye fish alone its handy to take a little piece of neoprene so u can grip the swivel between yer teeth and maintin a tight trace to the hooks
jst realised what confused ye the bottom jaw is part of the head .

In reply to Post #1000 Hi guys.very good article and very usefull to me as a newbie to pike.however im a little confused, you say about sliding your finger along the jaw to an area free from teeth and rakers.then you say lift the head.how do you lift the head when your applying contact to the bottom jaw?
I had a very small jack today that nailed a large lure and hooked in very close vacinity to the rakers.very tricky.ive heard bigger fish are easier to unhook.i fish alone so cannot be advised.further help would be much appreciated.cheers

In reply to Post #2 Great write up Andy, as said above me using the net to put a fish back isnt a bad idea either. I personally use my unhooking mat which zips up, place the mat on the water and go from there.
