I've just joined this Forum as I intend to get back into Pike fishing. My main fishing interest is fly fishing , most of this involves river fishing for Trout and Grayling. I've recently tried casting pike flies on a local canal but no success yet.
I have salvaged from my garage some old 2.5 and 2.75lb test curve carp rods and hope to try some dead-baiting for Pike, again on the canal but also on local lakes and possibly drains on the Somerset levels.

I'm thinking of buying a couple of pre-loved Shimano Baitrunner reels for these rods but would welcome any advice as to which size / model to choose??

I have looked at some YouTube video's (Mick Brown etc.) and it would seem that the 8000 series is quite a popular choice. but I'm still unsure about which model in the range to look out for and in fact the differences between them.

While I think about it - advice on line vs. braid would also be appreciated. At the moment I'm thinking 30lb braid?

Thanks,

Paul
